A game of lawn bowling can rid you off all the stress of day to day life, many will recommend a game for those aching legs and back as well. The playing area, known as a green, is approx. 18 feet wide and 125 feet long.
A team can be made up with one to four players, and each player has a set of bowls. The number of people on the team determines whether each player uses two, three or four bowls. The bowls weigh a few ounces over three pounds and although they look perfectly round they are actually cut on a bias. This means that one side of the bowl is slightly bigger than the other, and the bias causes the bowl to adopt a curve rather than maintain a straight line.
When we read the history of lawn bowling we can understand that it is not just the sport but also its history is very interesting. The ball game was popular with the pharaohs, balls of stone have been found in the Egyptian graves. When the game spread from Egypt to Greece and Rome which was seven thousand years ago they had little knowledge that it would last several centuries. Playing Lawn Bowling finds a mention in the prehistoric and ancient civilizations of Aztec and the Polynesia .
The Chinese and the North Americans are also known to have played lawn bowling. In Hawaii this was a popular game amongst the Polynesians who used elliptical bowls about 4inches in diameter. The discs were made of stone and known as a rather ‘tribalesque' Ula Maika. A distance of 18 meters (which would be 60 feet) separated the bowling area and the discs.
They even have lawn bowling for disability in Sydney and a lawn bowling championships for the disabled was held at the Rydalmere club in 1999. So all you guys put on your lawn bowling shoes and get set for a fun game of lawn bowling.
